Exploring The Absolute

Prompted by teachings by Nisargadatta Maharaj, in this session we delve deep into the nature of reality, Bentinho’s personal path of self-realization, and how to avoid common roadblocks people run into en-route to The Absolute.

Conviction can cut through the amount of practice required. You need practice to gain direct experience, and direct experience convinces you. Then, during times when you’re not practicing direct experience as much, conviction will carry it over more effortlessly. The more convinced you are, the more you are actually practicing all the time; you’re carrying it with you. It’s becoming the substratum of your everyday experience.

Experience doesn’t prove that something is real. Reality by definition is permanent and changeless. If something is real, it needs to be there no matter what. Thoughts, emotions, feelings and worldly appearances are not there no matter what. They are a hallucination that depend on the perceiver; they are temporary and changing—therefore not real. Just because you experience something that doesn’t make it real.

A bias is a preference you put identity into; like your sense of identity depends upon that preference or angle, and therefore you feel located inside of it. It’s a preference that contains you, whereas a preference for tea over coffee doesn’t contain you. A bias is what you stand for. It distorts your self-awareness.
